Your Superhero Journey Begins Now

Your Superhero Journey Begins Now

VVP President's Post

I had the privilege of delivering the commencement address for Colorado Mountain College’s graduation on May 2. Below is a condensed version of that speech - a celebration of resilience, adventure, and the inner superhero in each of us.

Today, we gather to celebrate your academic journey, and what better place than the breathtaking Colorado Rockies to celebrate the heroes you’ve become. You’ve climbed your own mountain—no capes needed, though those would’ve been cool.

Now, I could stand here and quote Aristotle or Oprah, but instead, let’s assemble some wisdom from a few friends of ours: the superheroes. After all, if school has taught you anything, it’s that you all have a little superhero inside you. So, let’s dive in.

Thor once said, "Whosoever holds this hammer, if they are worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Graduates, you don’t need Mjölnir to prove your worth. Your worthiness is already evident in the degrees you’ve earned, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the resilience you’ve shown during late-night study sessions powered by coffee and sheer willpower.

Superman taught us to stand for "truth, justice, and the American way." You’ve spent years learning how to fly – metaphorically - and now it’s time to use your powers for good. Whether you’re headed to the workforce, continuing your education, or changing the world, remember: you don’t need x-ray vision to see what’s right.

Wonder Woman said it best: "You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know." Whether you’ve lassoed essays or fought battles with self-doubt, you’ve shown the strength to succeed. Keep channeling that Amazonian power as you face new challenges.

Iron Man, with all his snark and brilliance, reminded us: "Sometimes you’ve got to run before you can walk." Tony Stark would approve of your entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking. But remember, innovation is only as good as the heart behind it. Be bold, but don’t forget the human element.

Spider-Man lived by the mantra, "With great power comes great responsibility." You now have the power of knowledge, which comes with a responsibility to your community, your environment, and yourself. So, swing into action and make the world a better place.

Batman taught us that preparation and determination can overcome any obstacle. He didn’t have superpowers—just gadgets, grit, and a strong moral compass. You’ve got your own utility belt

now, filled with skills, knowledge, and maybe some snacks. Use it wisely.

Wolverine showed us that scars tell stories, and toughness comes from embracing who you are, claws and all. Your journey wasn’t perfect, and it didn’t have to be. Those late nights and tough classes weren’t just obstacles—they were adamantium-laced lessons that made you unstoppable.

Let’s not forget Deadpool, who’d remind us not to take life - or ourselves - too seriously. Humor is a superpower, too, and it’ll save you more time than you can count. Be bold, be cheeky, and don’t be afraid to occasionally break the fourth wall.

Finally, Black Panther left us with this wisdom: "In times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers." Graduates, you are bridge builders. You’ve connected ideas, people, and opportunities. Keep forging those connections as you step into your future.

As you walk out of here today as a graduate, remember that every superhero story starts with a leap of faith. Whether you’re swinging from the skyscrapers of Denver, leaping into the next great adventure, or running your race with the perseverance of a Wakandan warrior, you are equipped to save the day, doing so in your own way.

The world needs heroes like you. So suit up, graduates. The stage is yours.
