Why Fly Into Eagle Airport to Get to Aspen?
Why are more and more people flying into Eagle Airport to get to Aspen? Eagle County Airport (EGE) is a natural gateway to the Roaring Fork Valley: much closer than the nearly four-hour drive from Denver, and far less prone to winter storm cancellations than Aspen's own airport. Flying into Eagle is the ideal middle ground; it's closer than Denver, more dependable than Aspen, and only about an hour and a half from town by car. Travelers have caught on. EGE just wrapped its second record year in a row, following its all-time high in 2024 with more than 329,000 passenger boardings in 2025. And with Aspen's airport about to shut down for most of the season, we expect many more Aspen-bound visitors to come through Eagle County than ever.
Aspen's Airport Is Closing for Most of 2027
If you haven't heard yet, Aspen-Pitkin County Airport will close completely from April 4 through November 19, 2027, for a full runway reconstruction, with a new terminal to follow by 2029. It's a major project that will be well worth it for our neighbors, but for seven and a half months, Aspen will be a resort town without an airport. EGE will be the closest commercial airfield during that stretch, and we can expect even more people to fly into Eagle County to get to Aspen when that happens. That's good news for the entire valley, not just for us: every arriving flight brings guests through our hotels, restaurants, and shops. At Blue Sky Limo, we're already planning for this.
More Flights, Easier Arrivals
Part of what makes us confident is the airport itself: getting to EGE keeps getting easier. The airport's winter network now reaches 16 nonstop destinations, with American's new Charlotte service among the recent additions, and United is flying larger aircraft on its Eagle routes with 30 to 40 percent more seats. For many years, EGE mostly served Vail and Beaver Creek skiers. These days, the airport officially counts Aspen among its most popular destinations.
Then there's the reliability question. Aspen's airfield is closest to town, but Eagle County Regional Airport gives travelers far better odds of actually landing there. A Hopper study of winter flights, reported by the Vail Daily, found that as many as one in three winter flights into Aspen were canceled or delayed by more than an hour, the worst rate in the country. Flying into Eagle also means arriving already in the mountains: no Eisenhower Tunnel, no Vail Pass, no metro traffic. Our guests mention that last part all the time; skipping that stretch of I-70 and its uncertainty is exactly why many of them fly into EGE in the first place.

When Denver Still Makes Sense
Eagle Airport closes for winter storms less often than Aspen, but no mountain airport is bulletproof. When a big storm hits the Rockies, flights into both mountain airfields can be canceled, and a diverted Aspen flight usually gets sent to Denver. Denver is also the practical choice for international travelers, and its huge schedule of nonstop routes usually means cheaper fares and more flexibility.
That's why we treat Denver as a first-class option rather than a fallback. Our private car service from Denver to Aspen covers the 221 miles in about 3 hours and 45 minutes. We track every inbound flight, and if weather reroutes yours, dispatch rebuilds the pickup around wherever you actually land.
Denver Airport to Aspen rates (one way, per vehicle, not per passenger):
| Season | Large SUV (up to 4) | XL SUV (up to 6) | Sprinter Van (up to 14) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (May-Oct) | $1,250 | $1,350 | $2,050 |
| Winter (Nov-Apr) | $1,300 | $1,400 | $2,100 |
| Peak (Dec 22-Jan 4, Feb 14-22) | $1,400 | $1,500 | $2,250 |
Summer Is a Different Story
In summer, weather worries mostly disappear, and the Roaring Fork Valley is at its best: the Maroon Bells, the Food & Wine Classic, and a festival calendar that runs all season long. The decision becomes a simple one about schedules and fares, and Eagle's expanding network makes the comparison friendlier every year. It's also worth remembering that the 2027 closure covers the entire summer and fall: anyone planning an Aspen wedding, festival trip, or fall getaway that year will be flying into Eagle or Denver. We expect our Eagle-to-Aspen route to be the busiest it's ever been in 2027 and to keep growing from there, and honestly, we can't wait.
Why Choose Blue Sky Limo for Getting to Aspen

Whichever airport your guests choose, we come in for the last leg of the trip. There's no taxi line at a small mountain airport and only a handful of rideshare drivers on the best of days, so Aspen-bound arrivals arrange their car in advance. Blue Sky Limo has been family-owned and operated in the Vail Valley since 2012, with a perfect safety record throughout. Our all-wheel-drive luxury SUVs run studded snow tires all winter, our 14-passenger Sprinter vans handle large groups and wedding parties, and our chauffeurs are locals who drive these mountain roads every day. Every booking includes real-time flight tracking and 24/7 dispatch, so an early or late arrival changes nothing.
From the Eagle terminal, our Eagle Airport to Aspen car service heads west on I-70 to Glenwood Springs and up Highway 82 through the Roaring Fork Valley, 68.5 miles and roughly 90 minutes door to door.
