Every election season brings discussion about candidates, campaigns, issues, and outcomes.

But before we talk about any of those things, it's worth talking about something even more fundamental: participation.

Voting is one of the simplest and most powerful ways we can contribute to the future of our communities. It doesn't require holding public office or being an expert on every issue. It simply requires showing up, and showing up matters.

Strong communities don't happen by accident. They are built by people who stay informed, get involved, and help shape the place they call home. Voting is one of the most important expressions of that engagement.

It's also important to remember that voting is not just a national conversation. Many of the decisions that most directly affect our daily lives happen much closer to home.

Local elections influence issues such as housing, transportation, public safety, education, open space, and infrastructure. County commissioners, school board members, town councils, special districts, and local ballot measures all help shape the future of our region. Local decisions have a direct impact on quality of life. That's why participation matters.

Colorado has long been recognized as a national leader in voter participation, and Eagle County has traditionally performed even better. In the most recent election cycle, voter turnout in Eagle County approached 82%, reflecting a culture of civic engagement that should make all of us proud.

But participation should not be viewed simply as a statistic. It should be viewed as a community value.

The healthiest communities are not the ones where everyone agrees. In fact, disagreement is a normal and necessary part of democracy. What matters is that people remain engaged, informed, respectful, and willing to participate in good faith.

Civic engagement is bigger than partisan politics.

It's about recognizing that we all have a stake in the future of our communities regardless of political affiliation or ideology.

One of the challenges facing our nation today is that political debates often overshadow civic responsibility. National politics can dominate our attention, while local issues receive less focus.

Yet some of the most meaningful work in democracy happens close to home.

Throughout Eagle County, people with different viewpoints work together every day to address workforce housing, education, transportation, economic vitality, environmental stewardship, and quality-of-life issues. Progress rarely comes from ideological purity. More often, it comes from collaboration, compromise, and a willingness to focus on results.

That's why voting matters. It is one of the ways we help shape the future of our communities and ensure that our voices are part of the conversation.

As Election Day approaches, I hope that residents take the time to learn about the issues, understand the choices before them, and make their voices heard. Not because any one candidate, party, or issue is guaranteed to solve every challenge, but because participation itself strengthens our democracy.

Partisanship may win elections, but it rarely solves community challenges. Solutions are usually found when people are willing to work across differences and focus on results. I encourage you to vote for pragmatic solutions over party platforms and for leadership over party labels as you fill out your ballot.

Because the challenges facing Eagle County, Colorado, and our nation are rarely partisan. More often, they are practical. They require leaders who are willing to listen, collaborate, solve problems, and focus on results.

At the end of the day, voting is not simply about selecting leaders or picking issues. Voting is about investing in the future of our communities, and it's about helping shape the place we call home.
