The State of American Business and Why Eagle County Should Pay Attention
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently delivered its annual State of American Business address, and the central message was refreshingly clear: America’s business community must be fearless. Not reckless. Not ideological. Fearless in choosing growth, innovation, and opportunity over stagnation and scarcity.
That message matters in Washington. It matters even more in places like Eagle County.
Nationally, the Chamber has made the case that sustained economic growth, at roughly 3% annually, is the single most effective way to raise wages, improve quality of life, and expand opportunities for more Americans. Growth isn’t an abstract concept; it’s what allows families to get ahead, communities to invest in infrastructure, and businesses to create good jobs. Without it, every challenge feels harder, and every solution feels smaller.
Sound familiar?
Here in Eagle County, we experience this tension every day. We live in one of the most desirable places in the country, yet we struggle with housing availability, workforce shortages, childcare access, and the rising cost of doing business. These pressures don’t exist because our economy is broken. They exist because it’s strong, in demand, and evolving faster than our systems can keep up.
That’s where fearlessness comes in.
Fear leads us to protect the status quo, even when it no longer serves the community. Fear says we can’t build housing without changing the character of our towns. Fear says workforce challenges are inevitable. Fear says growth is something to manage instead of something to shape.
But Eagle County’s history tells a different story.
Our economy has always been built by people willing to take risks. Small business owners who open restaurants, shops, and service companies; employers who invest in their people even when margins are tight; and community leaders who understand that a healthy business climate benefits everyone, not just business owners. Tourism, outdoor recreation, construction, healthcare, and professional services don’t thrive here by accident. They thrive because people choose progress over paralysis.
The Chamber’s address also emphasized the importance of workforce development and skills alignment, a national issue with very local consequences. Across the country, millions of jobs remain unfilled because workers don’t have access to training pathways that match today’s economy. In Eagle County, that gap shows up when employers can’t staff up, when workers commute long distances, or when young people leave because they don’t see a future here.
Solving that requires coordination, not finger-pointing. Business, education, and local government must work together to expand training, remove unnecessary barriers, and support policies that allow people to live where they work. Solutions such as housing, childcare, transit, and workforce development aren’t moral talking points; they are economic and community necessities.
The Chamber also made clear that innovation, including new technologies and AI aren’t something to fear, but something to harness responsibly. For local businesses, that means finding ways to work smarter, reach new customers, and stay competitive in a global economy, even from our mountain valley.
The takeaway from the State of American Business is simple: communities that embrace growth thoughtfully will lead; those that resist it will fall behind. Eagle County has always chosen leadership.
The question now isn’t whether change is coming, because it is. The question is whether we meet it with confidence and collaboration, or with hesitation and fear.
When we choose growth, invest in our workforce, and support policies that help businesses succeed, Eagle County’s future will remain as strong as its past. That’s not just good for business; it’s good for the entire community.
Fearless isn’t a slogan. It’s a strategy. And it’s one Eagle County knows well.
