A reflection on love, growth, and new beginnings
As a parent, the milestones of our children’s lives often sneak up on us. One moment you’re holding their tiny hand as you cross the street, and the next, you’re watching them cross the stage in their cap and gown. This year, I find myself in a unique position—not as a business leader or columnist, but as a proud father of a graduating high school senior.
To my daughter: this is for you. To all our graduates: your parents share similar sentiments.
From the day you entered this world, you brought a light that has grown brighter with every passing year. Watching you navigate the journey from a curious toddler to a confident and badass young woman has been the honor of my life. And now, as you prepare to take your next steps into adulthood, my heart swells with pride and bittersweet emotion.
Graduation is not just a ceremony marking the end of high school; it’s a celebration of the countless hours of hard work, determination, and growth you’ve demonstrated. I’ve seen you juggle academics, extracurriculars, sports, friendships, and family commitments with (mostly) grace. I’ve seen you face challenges head-on, learn from setbacks, and emerge stronger. Those moments of resilience and perseverance are the foundation for the incredible person you are becoming.
You have a gift for connecting with people, whether it’s your friends, teachers, or family. You listen with empathy, lead with kindness, and approach the world with an intensity that few can match. These qualities will serve you well as you step into the next chapter of your life. As you prepare to leave the comfort of your home and embark on new adventures, I want you to remember a few things.
First, embrace the unknown. Change can be intimidating, but it’s also where the magic happens. You’re heading into a world filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and discover who you are. Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore paths that might seem unconventional. Often, the best experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Second, stay true to yourself. The world will have opinions about who you should be and what you should do, but your voice is the one that matters most. Trust your instincts and follow your passions. Authenticity is your superpower, and the world needs more people who are unapologetically themselves.
Third, know that it’s okay to fail. Mistakes are not the end; they’re stepping stones to success. Every stumble is an opportunity to learn. You’ve shown time and time again that you have the resilience to rise, and that is no small feat.
Lastly, remember that you are never alone. Your family, your friends, and your community are your biggest cheerleaders. We’re here to celebrate your victories, support you in your struggles, and remind you of your worth when you forget.
As you head off to college, know that our home will always be your sanctuary. The door is open, the fridge is (mostly) stocked, and there’s always a place for you at the dinner table. We’ll miss your laughter echoing through the house, your late-night kitchen raids, and your endless sporting events - and we’re excited to see the amazing things you’ll accomplish in the future.
This is not a goodbye; it’s simply a new chapter. Your story is just beginning, and I have no doubt it will be extraordinary. You’ll make an impact wherever you go, not because of what you achieve, but because of who you are. And who you are is someone I am endlessly proud of.
Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. Thank you for teaching me as much as I’ve tried to teach you. Thank you for being you. Go out there and shine. Not because you must, but because you can. And remember, no matter where life takes you, you’ll always have a place to call home.
